Sewage backup is the most dangerous water damage type. Category 3 water contains bacteria, pathogens, and viruses. Every porous material in contact must be physically removed โ no exceptions. Your family's health depends on doing this correctly.

Water damage exists on a contamination spectrum. Category 1 (clean water from a burst pipe) is a drying problem. Category 3 โ which includes all sewage, black water, and flooding from outside sources โ is a biohazard problem first and a drying problem second.
Category 3 water contains: fecal coliform bacteria, E. coli, Hepatitis A, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, enteroviruses, and a host of other pathogens that are dangerous on contact, ingestion, or inhalation. In Orlando's warm environment, pathogen concentration multiplies rapidly. Exposure can cause gastrointestinal illness, respiratory infection, and in vulnerable populations (children, elderly, immunocompromised individuals), more serious outcomes.
Never attempt DIY sewage cleanup. Consumer products, shop vacs, and rubber gloves are not sufficient protection from Category 3 pathogens. All work must be performed by crews in full PPE โ Tyvek suits, respirators, and nitrile gloves โ with EPA-registered sanitization and proper biohazard disposal.
Any porous material in contact with Category 3 sewage water cannot be decontaminated to safe levels โ it must be physically removed and disposed of as biohazardous waste. This includes: carpet and carpet padding, drywall to 12โ18 inches above the waterline, insulation, wood baseboards, particleboard cabinets, and any other material with open pores that absorbed contaminated water.
This is not a cost-saving decision we can make for you. It is the IICRC S500 standard and Florida Department of Health guidance. Any contractor who tells you sewage-contaminated drywall can be "dried in place" and treated with antimicrobials is either inexperienced or dishonest.
Standard HO-3 policies do NOT automatically cover sewage backup. Coverage requires a separate sewer backup endorsement, which must be purchased before the event. The cost is typically $40โ$80 per year โ far less than the average $7,000โ$25,000 sewage backup restoration. Check your policy declarations page for "water backup and sump overflow" coverage. If you don't have it, add it at your next renewal.
Category 3 biohazard requires immediate professional response. Don't attempt DIY cleanup. Our certified crews carry full PPE and biohazard disposal equipment. Available 24/7.
